SOME 200 primary school and secondary school students were all smiles when they received their vouchers for new sets of school uniform in Penang.
The uniforms were sponsored by Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh and Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer, who said the programme was aimed at lightening the burden of parents who have to prepare for the reopening of school.
“This is the fifth year we are giving out school uniform.
“The effort is not to fish for votes, as some people have said, but a way to provide for the people,” he said after handing over the vouchers at Pusat Pemancar in Taman Tun Sardon, Gelugor, on Saturday.
The students can redeem their school uniform in accurate sizes from a specific shop.
Later, Rayer also distributed the vouchers to about 80 students at the Dewan JKKK Sungai Gelugor in Jalan Ismail Nagore.
Father of five Mohd Aswadi Mohd Puadi, 48, said he was grateful for the timely distribution of vouchers as the effort helped him save about RM150.
“Each can buy two pairs of school uniform,” the lorry driver said.
Rayer added that the number of recipients for the school uniform had increased since 2008, when there were only 200.
This year, 600 students from the Seri Delima constituency benefited from the programme.
“We hope to be able to also provide school shoes and school bags next year,” he said.
