Arif and Misbun go tumbling out in third round of India GP

PETALING JAYA: There was no joy for Mohd Arif Abdul Latif at the India Grand Prix in Lucknow, India, yesterday.

Much was expected from the 23-year-old Arif following his quarter-finalist appearance in last month’s Hong Kong Open. Instead, the seventh-seeded Arif lost 10-21, 16-21 to R.M.V Gurusaidutt of India in the men’s singles third round.

It was Arif’s second straight defeat to a lower-ranked player, having lost to unknown South Korean Lee Dong-keun in the Korean Open GP Gold earlier this month.

Misbun Ramdan Misbun was also not his usual self, going down 16-21, 21-13, 16-21 to compatriot Goh Soon Huat.

Soon Huat, however, is not expected to progress further as he will probably face second seed P. Kashyap of India.

In men’s doubles, former world junior champions Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han blew a one game lead to lose 21-16, 19-21, 16-21 to sixth seeds Andrei Adistia-Christopher Rusdianto of Indonesia.

There was, however, some joy for Malaysia in the women’s singles and mixed doubles as Sannatasah Saniru and Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing reached the last eight.

Sannatasah scored a 21-10, 21-12 win over Russia’s Ksenia Polikarpova in the second round. She will take on sixth seed Nozomi Okuhara of Japan next. Sonia Cheah failed to clear her hurdle after losing 21-13, 5-11, 11-21 to third seed Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand.

Aik Quan-Pei Jing proved their mettle as the second ranked mixed pair in Malaysia by beating Indonesia’s Irfan Fadhilah-Weni Anggraini 21-18, 22-20. A stiffer test awaits them next as they go up against Singapore’s Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Vanessa Neo for a place in the semi-finals.
