Toys and big-boy toys go really well together with the Ferrari LEGO line of models from Shell.
OUR first thoughts when we saw the Shell LEGO Ferrari collection went like this: “Vroom vroom vroooom vrooooommmm whee!”
Later, when we had ... collected ourselves long enough to form proper English sentences in our head, our subsequent thought was, “This is so cool, we get to spend an evening playing with LEGO Ferraris and it’s actually part of our job!” Do note the tone of absolute glee.
You could say it’s pretty childish for a 29-year-old to get this excited about toys, but come on, this is LEGO AND Ferrari.
These things appeal to both our kiddish love of LEGO’s imaginative bricks and our big-boy fascination for fast cars. And we prefer “childlike”.
Shell has brought these exclusive Ferrari-themed LEGO sets to our shores and there are six cars and one minifigures set in the whole collection.
The cars are fantastic representations of real Ferraris, and they’re the most affordable way to fill your garage with these iconic vehicles.
In the collection are the iconic F1 race car, the 150° Italia; the Scuderia Ferrari Truck (made at an optimal scale, it’s a prime example of how Ferrari vehicles were transformed into LEGO models) which transports the race cars; the classic 250 GT Berlinetta; a sexy black Ferrari FXX; a yellow 458 Italia sports car; and an F40 sports car with racing decals.
Plus, of course, the minifigures set which features an F1 driver and his support crew.
The models were easy enough to build, with each set containing anywhere from 20 to 50-something parts.
Inspired by the Ferrari constructor challenge (see the iSnap video on this page), we tried to assemble the 150° Italia while timing ourselves; alas, it was one of us against three of them, so it was only logical that we took three times as long to put it together.
While most of the bricks would be familiar to LEGO fans, there are some pieces – such as the roof and bonnet of the 458 Italia – that appear to be exclusively designed to capture the Ferrari aesthetics.
The sticker decals add a lot of Ferrari flavour to the models, too. If you’re a perfectionist like us, you might pop a vein trying to apply the stickers just right, but the patience and painstaking application will be worth it, trust us.
Once you’ve assembled your cars, you can enjoy a neat feature that these models have – the pull-back motors, which lets you send your Ferrari zipping across the coffee table with just a small pull.
You can easily spend an entire day gleefully racing these tiny sports cars, and if you’ll excuse us, that’s exactly what we’re going to do right now.
Wait, hang on, our editor just reminded us that we’re supposed to tell you more about the Shell promotion instead of just playing with the cars all day.
Here’s the deal: The promotion is valid from Nov 8 to Feb 3 next year, and the six cars are available for RM12.90 each at participating outlets.
However, if you want to buy the coveted minifigures set, or if you want to get the cars at just RM10.90, make sure you either fill in at least RM40 worth of Shell V-Power first or grab four litres of Shell Helix engine oils.

Better collect them quick; these Ferraris will go very fast.
