TALENTED young ASEAN pianists will now be able to show their talent and passion for their art to an international audience.
Persatuan Chopin Malaysia will be holding its fifth ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition which will end with two major concerts.
One of the pieces featured is by local composer Ng Chong Lim that is a fusion of traditional instruments and piano providing the musical backdrop to a wayang kulit performance.
The competition, held biennially since 2004, has provided an avenue for aspiring pianists to debut internationally and this year it attracted 165 entries.
After preliminary auditions, 71 participants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Kuwait, Bosnia-Hercegovia and Australia were left.
Judging them will be an international panel comprising of professionals and educators from Malaysia, Poland, Hong Kong, Russia, Kazakhstan, the US and Vietnam.
Local talent Chong Lih Yoong, 15, who is participating for the thrid time, feels confident about her upcoming performance.
Cheong Zhi Ren, 10, listened to a performance of one of the previous participants and found it “cool” enough to inspire him to join this year.
A veteran of many other competitions, Zhi Ren is quite excited and hopes that he will do well.
The first four days of the competition from Nov 20 to 23 will be held at the Panggung Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur.
The final stage will be held on Nov 25 at the Plenary Theatre in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center.
