MCA: Barisan has not agreed to field Hee in Jelapang

PETALING JAYA: MCA has denied that Barisan Nasional had agreed to allow incumbent Hee Yit Fong to contest the Jelapang state seat on behalf of the coalition in the upcoming general election.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said the party had not had any discussion with the Prime Minister about giving up the seat in Perak.

“The Jelapang MCA division and I have not deliberated about allowing an outsider to stand in the seat under the MCA ticket,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Hee had said she would be recontesting the seat and claimed that Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would announce the details soon.

Dr Chua said winning the general election required the support from all Barisan component parties and it was crucial that a candidate receives support not just from the people, but also the component parties.

He stressed that Barisan was a collective decision-making coalition and it was never a norm for the coalition to talk about its seat allocation and candidacy openly.

“While Hee can announce that she is the candidate for Jelapang in the coming general election, without the support from the MCA division and especially the grassroots members, it is unlikely that she will win,” he said.

Hee won the Jelapang seat under the DAP ticket in 2008 but she later left the party and became a Barisan-friendly independent.
