WHEN it comes to the hustle and bustle of a music festival programme, there is no other outdoor festival in the country that does it better than the Penang Island Jazz Festival, which is set to run with its ninth edition from Nov 29 to Dec 2.

The main stage events for Penang Island Jazz Festival will take place at the Bayview Beach Resort, Batu Feringgi in Penang from Dec 1 to 2.

The festival, with its outdoor concert setting, fringe stages, workshops and other supporting activities, has attracted a wide range of music fans and established itself as a highly anticipated musical experience in the region.

This year’s festival will begin with the Sundown @ TSG showcase on Nov 29, an experimental event introduced last year which received great response.

Sundown @ TSG will again this year feature performances by Zalila Lee, Froya, Rafique Rashid and Caipifruta in the exotic setting of the Tropical Spice Gardens (Lone Crag Villa, Jalan Teluk Bahang, Teluk Bahang in Penang).

The festival’s main stage performances for its Jazz By The Beach programme, starting Dec 1, will once again feature local and international performers.

The acts performing on this year’s Jazz By The Beach Stage are Martin Taylor, Butterscotch, Kekko Fornarelli Trio featuring Ruso Sala, The Deans, Albatrosh, TheArtOfFusion, Francesca Han Trio, Estudiantina Ensemble, Madeline Bell and Hans Vroomans Trio, Mezzotono, Bittersweet and Elvira Arul & The Acoustic Souls.

A number of other supporting musical activities will also be held within the festival’s four-day period to maintain the festival’s intention of creating a “total music festival experience” such as the afternoon Creative Malaysia Programme held on three different fringe stage venues (Bayview Beach Resort, Hard Rock Hotel and ParkRoyal Penang Resort) with performances by Darrin Rozells, DUST, Froya, Kien Lim, Funkyard, Rafique Rashid, Terms Crisis, Volatile and Zalila Lee.

For the first time this year, the festival is working with Backyard Pub & Grill on a performer recommendation arrangement through Backyard’s JAMFest programme. The performers selected through this arrangement this year are the Faridian Jazz Quartet and Black Lightbulb.

Other activities are workshops by participating artistes, The Island Jazz Forum with a panel consisting of Piotr Turkiewicz (Jazztopad Festival, Poland, artistic director), Jae Jin In (Jarasum International Jazz Festival artistic director), Catherine Mayer (JustJazz Agency owner) and Ian Patterson (allaboutjazz.com Asian correspondent), Penang’s popular music of the 1940s to 1960s exhibition, the 10-minute platform, community drum circle, the fter-Hours Jazz Jam and the Jazz With A Heart Charity Dinner (Bayview Beach Resort Ballroom, Nov 30) which is co-organised with The Rotary Club of Penang.
