SELF-EMPLOYED Nasir Khan Md Ismail, 39, who is the sole breadwinner for his family, lost his left leg due to complications from acute diabetes in 2009 and his right leg is now showing signs of being infected.
Nasir Khan, who was selling bread for 15 years before he lost his leg, has a wife Bismaya Banu, 39, who is a homemaker and four children aged between three and 18 years old.
He said doctors told him in March that his right leg would have to be amputated too but with the help of some family members, he sought second opinion from a doctor in Madurai, Tamil Nadu in South India who told him that his leg could be saved if early treatment was provided.
Nasir Khan, who is receiving a monthly aid of RM300 from the Welfare Department and another RM300 from the Pusat Urus Zakat for his family’s expenses, said:
“With a cash aid of RM13,000 from the Kongres India Muslim Malaysia (Kimma), I went to South India and received treatment for my right leg, which is showing signs of improvement.
“Though I am still depending on the wheelchair to move about, I am now able to stand up with my right leg even though for a short while,” he told reporters when Bagan Barisan Nasional coordinator David Chua and Sungai Puyu Barisan coordinator Sum Yoo Keong visited him recently.
Nasir Khan is hoping that well-wishers would help him get a prosthetic leg for his left limb and pay for his follow-up treatment in India.
“I want to be independent and I still have the enthusiasm to work and find income to take care of my family as I love them very much,” he said.
He said he needed RM20,000 to pay for the prosthetic leg, seek follow-up treatment and other needy expenses for his stay in India for two months. He said he also had to seek additional funds to treat his left eye which had been affected by his acute diabetes.
Chua, who handed a personal donation of RM500 to Nasir Khan, said he would help the latter apply for the 1MCA Medical Fund for his treatment.
