PM: MRT Co's CEO is Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid

PUTRAJAYA: The former managing director of Sime Darby Plantation, Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid, has been appointed the chief executive officer of the Ministry of Finance Inc's company MRT Co.

MRT Co will be the project and asset owner of the Klang Valley MY Rapid Transit (KVMRT) project effective Sept 1.

In announcing the appointment, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said undivided focus and strong leadership were of utmost priority in handling a project of KVMRT's size and complexity.

Najib added that Azhar came with a solid track record in delivering results and managing large-scale operations.

He also said that prior to finalising the decision, he had consulted Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abu Kassim and Sime Darby Group president and group chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Bakke Salleh to confirm that Azhar was cleared from the investigation into the losses suffered by Sime Darby due to cost overrun in its energy and utilities operations in 2010.

Azhar, is scheduled to start work in the first week of Sept and will report directly to Najib, in his capacity as Finance Minister 1, and Finance Minister 2 Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah.

He is a Fellow member of the Association of Chartered Accountants in the United Kingdom and member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants. He is married with two children.
