JOHOR BARU: MCA will pick candidates for the next general election based on their quality and popularity among the people and not on their positions in the party, said Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
The MCA president added that it was important to pick “winnable” candidates who would ensure victory.
“Voters today do not merely vote along party lines but also take into consideration the quality of the candidates before making their choice,” he told reporters after attending the Johor Baru MCA division annual general meeting here yesterday.
Dr Chua also said Johor state exco members Tan Kok Hong and Hoo Seong Chang would not be seeking re-election.
“Both of them told me that they would not stand in the election and I would like to thank them for their contributions to the party.
“They are stepping down to provide opportunities to others,” he said.
Dr Chua also took a swipe at Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu, who heads the state government committee, over the mushrooming of illegal entertainment outlets in the state.
“If he cannot do anything about them, maybe he can organise a demonstration or seek advice from someone who is more knowledgeable,” he said.
