POVERTY forced a widow to hand over three of her six children to a relative.
Makkal Osai reported that the 29-year-old widow, G. Susila from Teluk Intan, Perak had to do that following her husband's sudden death about a year ago.
She said she had to give up the children aged three, two and one to a relative as she could not bear to see them go hungry.
She said her mother-in-law was helping to look after her three other children who were still studying.
“My salary as a labourer in an estate is not enough to cover the house rental, food and the schooling expenses of my children,” she said.
PAS Supporter Club vice-president, P. Surianarayanan, who came to know about Susila's plight, provided one month's provision to the family.
He also promised to help secure aid from the Welfare Department.
>Tamil Nesan reported that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, 86, kicked off his party's DMK political campaign at his birth place, Tiruvarur constituency on Wednesday.
The DMK leader, who had announced a string of freebies including grinders, laptops for students and bus passes for senior citizens in the party's manifesto, expanded the number of beneficiaries.
Karunanidhi announced that the free laptops, originally meant for first year college students, would now be given to all students of government and government-aided colleges and the bus passes, meant for senior citizen over 60, would be also be given to those aged between 58 and 59.
He said the DMK, if returned to power, would do more than it had promised in the manifesto, pointing out that the scheme to replace huts with concrete houses now under implementation was not promised in 2006, when his party was voted to power.
