Wife seeks RM400mil from Taib Mahmud's son

KUALA LUMPUR: Datin Seri Shahnaz A. Majid, the daughter-in-law of the Sarawak Chief Minister, is applying for a RM400mil divorce settlement from her estranged husband Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib.

Shahnaz, 48, who is the sister of jazz queen Datuk Sheila Majid, claimed that they had not been intimate for more than 10 years.

She contended that Mahmud, 48, a businessman who is the eldest son of Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, had physically and mentally tortured her.

She is seeking a dissolution of her marriage from the Lower Syariah Court under fasakh (her own application for divorce) on grounds that her husband had not carried out his marital duties.

In her statement of claim, Shahnaz said she married Mahmud on Jan 9, 1992, and that they had a 17-year-son.

Marital woes: Shahnaz and Mahmud

Shahnaz said she was seeking the divorce as they often had misunderstandings and had lived apart since 2001.

She added that after two years of marriage, Mahmud started to act aggressively towards her and punched her head and face, kicked her ribs and choked her.

She said Mahmud also used abusive words against her, such as “desperate and old” and “crazy”, causing her to suffer emotional stress.

In her divorce papers filed on Feb 21, she stated that Mahmud had also married a Russian who has three children.

Syarie judge (Lower Syariah Court) Mohd Amirul Adam Ahmad set March 24 for mention yesterday after Shahnaz’s lead counsel Dr Mohd Rafie Mohd Shafie said the divorce application had been delivered to Mahmud’s Jalan Sri Hartamas residence but was not handed over to him personally.

Shahnaz had also filed applications on Feb 21 to get RM300mil in matrimonial property (harta sepencarian) and RM100mil in gifts (mutaah).

Her application for matrimonial property and gifts is fixed for discussion at the Syariah Court here on March 15.

In her application for matrimonial property, Shahnaz stated that Mahmud held the executive chairman post in Syarikat Cahaya Mata Sarawak.

She is claiming 50% of all assets such as seven luxury cars, houses in various locations and land in Sarawak, companies and shares.Alternatively, she is asking for the assets to be sold off and the proceeds to be divided equally between them.

In asking RM100mil as gifts, Shahnaz said Mahmud had the capability to pay her to enable her to start her life afresh.
