PETALING JAYA: The Combined Old Boys Rugby Association (Cobra) Blacks will field a much stronger side in the 16-team HSBC-Cobra 10’s tournament at the MBPJ Stadium on Nov 12-13.
Coach Duncan Robertson said the team packed more firepower with five New Zealanders, five Fijians and an Australian joining the four local players.
“There is quality across the board this time,” said Robertson, who guided the team to the Plate final last year.
Cobra lost to finalists New Zealand Legends 24 -5 in the quarterfinals to be relegated to the Plate competition.
They then lost 19-15 to Gungahlin of Australia in the Plate final.
“But the other teams in the fray are strong as well. Besides defending champions Penguins (of England), there are no less than four other teams capable of winning the title,” said Robertson.
Also in the reckoning are Massey RFC, Canterbury RFC and Ponsonby, all of New Zealand, and Fijan side Nadroga. Meanwhile, Astro have come on board as one of the sponsors of the tournament, joining Carlsberg Malaysia, IJM Corporation, Air Asia, Newfields Property Group and Gatorade.
“On behalf of Cobra and the rugby fraternity, I would like to record our sincere gratitude to our sponsors for their support,” said tournament organising committee chairman Tan Sri Krishnan Tan.
