AN OPPOSITION MP has claimed that the prices of goods sold at Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) shops are not as cheap as the Government promoted them to be.
Tony Pua (DAP-Petaling Jaya Utara) said the items bearing the 1Malaysia brand, ranging from canned sardines to dishwashing liquid, were priced higher than certain hypermarkets.
He said the 1Malaysia shops were reportedly selling goods at 30% to 50% lower than market prices.
“While some products are indeed cheaper, the price difference for most 1Malaysia products are far less than the claims of the 30% to 50% discount,” Pua said.
“For a one-litre bottle of 1Malaysia brand bleach, the 1Malaysia shop charges consumers RM1.90 for the item, claiming huge savings of 36%.
“However, one can easily purchase the one-litre Carrefour or Tesco brand bleach for only RM1.29, which is 47% cheaper than the one in the 1Malaysia shop,” he said.
Another comparison was the one-litre 1Malaysia blackcurrant cordial, which was selling at RM9.50 while the Carrefour product of the same volume sold for RM3.09.
Pua called upon the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister to stop misleading the people with false advertising.
