PUTRAJAYA: Pasar malam trader Mohd Norazam Azman Shah could not believe his ears when his mother broke the happy news that he was among those selected for an affordable housing here.
And, as the icing on the cake, his number was picked by the Prime Minister during the balloting exercise for the first phase of the 1Malaysia Housing Programme (PR1MA).
With only a one in 13 chance of getting picked for the apartment units, Mohd Norazam did not think that he stood a chance.
In fact, he had chosen to wait in his car while his mother attended the ceremony here yesterday.
When his mother saw Najib drawing the first ballot and holding Mohd Norazam’s number, she quickly called her 25-year-old son to his disbelief.
“Only when I saw my name being ticked on the board for successful applicants, did it dawn upon me that my wish had finally come true,” said the man who sells yong tau foo at the Putrajaya pasar malam three times a week.
For Mohd Norazam who is married and has a seven-month-old baby, having a house to call his own has been top on his wish list for years.
“I’ve been looking for houses for three years in the nearby Kajang and Bangi areas. They were all still too expensive for me,” he told reporters, looking dazed and shaken by his “windfall”.
The first phase of the project will see 560 apartment units in Precinct 11 sold at an affordable price of RM120,000 and RM150,000. A staggering 7,113 people had applied for the units.
But among the most relieved faces of yesterday was PR1MA chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Mutalib Alias, who only had three hours of sleep the night before, having worked tirelessly to prepare for the first balloting exercise for the project.
With the transparent balloting system audited by major firm KPMG Business Advisory Sdn Bhd, he said that this appeared to be the best system for now.
