KUALA TERENGGANU: The Shahbandar jetty, which is a main gateway to Redang Island from here will be upgraded to accommodate a higher volume of passengers and also to be turned into a tourist spot.
Kuala Terengganu Mayor Datuk Adzlan Mohd Dagang said a new platform will be also constructed to cater for ferry passengers heading to to Seberang Takir, a suburb that situated across the Terengganu river.
“The new jetty will have tourist attraction features and expected to be completed by end of this year,” he told Star Metro.
Adzlan said the facelift of the jetty will cost RM8mil under an allocation by the Tourism Ministry.
He said the project will also help to beautify Kuala Terengganu to complement it status as a Waterfront City.
Adzlan said a pedestrian lane will be also constructed along the new jetty where tourists could walk to nearby Pasar Payang central market.
He said three kiosks selling local merchandise would be made available along the walkway.
The Mayor added that more parking spaces will be opened up at adjacent areas, so that visitors could walk to the jetty and the market without being caught in traffic bottlenecks.
