KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is all set to host the first-ever Malaysia Day celebrations to be declared a national public holiday.
Final touches and fine-tuning were underway as Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman and Information Communication, Culture and Arts Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim checked on the Padang Merdeka venue and programmes lined up for today.
“I am happy with the preparations,” Musa told reporters after watching the dress rehearsal here.
Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will be among those present at the celebrations.
“Today, we celebrate one of the most auspicious and historic of occasions. It is indeed an honour for Sabah to host the first Malaysia Day celebration,” Musa said in his message.
He said the event recognises Sabah’s role and contributions in the formation of Malaysia and national development.
“It is also highly appropriate as Sabah is a true reflection of the 1Malaysia concept with its multi-ethnic and multi-religious communities who live in harmony,” he added.
He said the declaration of Malaysia Day as a national holiday would help all Malaysians to better appreciate the country that we call home.
The recognition of Sept 16 as a national holiday marking Malaysia Day is in itself a reflection of the Federal leadership’s commitment in taking into consideration the views of people in Sabah, Musa added.
He said since independence in 1963, Sabah had gained tremendous growth in the social, economic and political fronts.
“We have a strong political presence within the framework of Barisan Nasional, and we know that by having a stable Government, we can continue to focus on our development plans,” said Musa.
