JOHOR BARU: Reigning champion SMK Tun Fatimah retained their title at the state-level Malaysia National Band Competition (Natcomp) 2010 held at SMK Dato Jaafar here.
The band’s drum major Nur Nadia Izati Sharif, 17, said she was thrilled to have made it this far in the competition.
“We practised really hard for this year’s competition,” she said, adding that there was stiff competition from the Sultan Ibrahim Girls School band.
The four schools which took part in the finals were SMK Tun Fatimah, SMK Sultan Ibrahim Girls School, SMK Paduka Tuan, and SMK Jalan Mengkibul.
The state level finals was also a preliminary round to find the top 10 bands based on national rankings to participate in the final to be held in Stadium Melawati, Shah Alam tomorrow.
SMK Tun Aminah’s teacher advisor Nur Daliza Che Daud, 34, is proud of her students’ achievements as they worked very hard.
“I believe that my students have what it takes to emerge as the champions in the Natcomp this year,” she added.
Natcomp director of operations Mohamed Isham Ishak said this is the 16th edition of the band competition since its inception in the 80s.
Mohamed Ishak hoped the competition would be able to expose the Malaysian bands to international-level events.
The World Band Championship technical advisor Wil Bijl said this year’s judging criterias were different from before as more constructive criticism were made.
“The judges now act more as advisors to the band members and their coaches,” he said, adding that there were still room for improvement.
He added that the bands should deliver their materials as if telling a story and be more expressive and perform less like a military band.
“Marching bands nowadays are more like entertainers,” he said.
