SHAH ALAM: Five people in Selangor were appointed as Justices of the Peace (JPs), the first time since the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ascended the throne in November 2001.
The five were Sepang Orang Kaya Besar Daerah (district palace representative) Prof Tengku Datuk Dr Jamaluddin Tengku Mahmud Shah Alhaj, Star Publications (M) Berhad executive director and group chief editor Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, St John Ambulance Malaysia president Datuk Dr Low Bin Tick, Pure Life Society honorary secretary Supramaniam Sinnasamy and Sunway Group deputy chairman Datuk Razman Md Hashim.
Their terms are effective Jan 1. The ceremony was held at the Istana Kayangan here yesterday.
The appointment of JPs comes after an eight-year break.
During the ceremony, Sultan Sharafuddin advised the JPs to come together to help shape the state and be honest at all times in their dealings with the people.
“I do not want to hear of JPs working for themselves. All JPs must come together to serve the people and help resolve issues in Selangor,” he said.
He added that no one was above the law and all must respect the law, especially JPs who were in government service and the private sector.
“Each JP must practise a high level of integrity and stay away from negative elements,” he said.
The Sultan also added that there had been numerous cases of corruption.
“Corruption will not only cause Selangor to become backward but will also cause individuals to be enveloped in greed and focus on themselves alone. We need JPs to eradicate the culture of corruption,” he said.
