Road closures for Sunday’s Penang Bridge Marathon

SEVERAL roads on Penang island and the mainland will be closed on Sunday for the Penang Bridge International Marathon 2010 which will be participated by about 25,000 participants.

State Internal Security, Public Order and Traffic chief Supt Wan Aziz Wan Husin said the roads leading to the Penang Bridge on the island and the mainland would be closed from 1am to 10am.

“Road users can take the ferry during the period. About 350 policemen and officers will be on duty to maintain traffic and safety,” he said.

Among the roads to be closed are the Jelutong Expressway and Jalan Tengku Kudin heading towards the bridge and Lebuhraya Sungai Nibong and Lebuhraya Bayan Lepas heading to Bayan Lepas.

The road from Queensbay Mall heading to Batu Maung will also be closed.

Other affected roads in the north-east district include the stretches from the junction of Weld Quay traffic light/Gat Lebuh Cecil, junction of Jalan Lebuh Macallum/JE, junction of Jalan Sungai Pinang to JE, junction of Jalan Hajjah Rehmah to JE, junction of Shell petrol station in Jelutong, Jalan Tengku Kudin to JE and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah to Penang Bridge.

For southwest district, affected roads are Jalan Aziz Ibrahim to Gold Coast Condominium roundabout, Jalan Batu Maung from the Bayan Baru roundabout, the road of Pulau Jerejak jetty from Gold Coast Condominium roundabout, Jalan Kampung Jawa intersection to Batu Maung and Jalan Sungai Keluang 1 intersection to Batu Maung.

For central Seberang Prai, affected roads are those leading to Lebuhraya Selatan PLUS to the Penang Bridge, the entry road from Lebuhraya Utara PLUS to the bridge and the entry road from Jalan Perusahaan to the bridge.

No roads in north Seberang Prai will be affected but there might be congestions caused by other road closures.

There are 5,500 parking bays available at the multi-storey carpark, basement carpark and open space carpark at Queensbay Mall.

There are four categories for the marathon — the full marathon (42.195km) to start at 2am, half marathon (21km) to start at 3am for men’s group while women’s group start at 3.15am, quarter marathon (10km) to start at 6.15am and fun run (10km) to start at 7am.
