PUTRAJAYA: The Batu Sapi by-election in Sabah will be held on Nov 4 – the same day as the by-election in Galas in Kelantan.
Nomination day for both by-elections is Oct 26.
The Election Commission made the decision after a two-hour meeting here yesterday.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof said the commission decided to hold the polls simultaneously as it felt a prolonged campaign period would only increase costs as well as tension among the various departments involved.
“The laws and regulations allow by-elections to be held simultaneously and we have done this before,” he said, citing last year’s simultaneous by-elections for the parliamentary seat of Bukit Gantang (in Perak) and the state seats of Bukit Selambau (Kedah) and Batang Ai (Sarawak).
Abdul Aziz said the cost for holding the Batu Sapi by-election was expected to be about RM1.3mil.
He said in the latest electoral roll there are 25,582 registered voters in Batu Sapi, including 1,535 postal voters.
