PKR picks Saifuddin to replace Salehuddin

PETALING JAYA: The PKR has appointed Machang MP Saifuddin Nasution as the party’s secretary-general to replace Datuk Salehuddin Hashim.

In its political bureau meeting last night, the party also decided to accept Salehuddin’s resignation.

Earlier, Salehuddin pleaded with central party leaders to respect his wish to quit.

He said there was no point discussing whether to accept his letter of resignation, which would be effective Jan 31.

“I hope the party leaders understand my position and let me go. I am not a politician.

“I have served the party for six years, and now I have decided to quit and concentrate on business,” the 58-year-old in a telephone interview. “Whether they like it or not, I have quit.”

PKR deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali has confirmed receiving the resignation letter via e-mail.

Salehuddin had served for four years as organising secretary and two years as secretary-general.

“The party is now stable, and I am leaving,” he said, reiterating his wish to return to the corporate world.

Salehuddin was involved in oil and gas consultancy services before being appointed party organising secretary in 2004.

He is said to be one of the key strategists in transforming the party from one that had suffered a colossal defeat in the 2004 general election to a political force to be reckoned with in the 2008 election.

Salehuddin created ripples in the party when he slammed the Selangor Government for its controversial RM391.7mil Talam Corporation Bhd debt buy-over.
