THERE are numerous karaoke joints around and we have checked out some in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. Some of these outlets even have branches outside Klang Valley.

This is the only karaoke outlet in Shah Alam. It doesn’t serve alcoholic drinks and children are allowed as long as they areaccompanied by their parents. The VIP room can fit in at least 40 people and includes a projector instead of the usual LCD screen. There is free flow of drinks for the entire day but there’s no lunch or dinner buffet. Prices range from RM6 to RM12.

This branch offers lunch and dinner spreads and also a free flow of drinks the entire day (alcoholic drinks are not included). Songs include Malay, Chinese and Indian. Prices range from RM3 to RM6.

Nicknamed the “Karaoke Jamban”, this is the ideal place to release stress for a few minutes. It offers rooms for two persons and a karaoke machine. You can even go solo if youwant. Prices range from RM8 to RM25.
Neway Karaoke Box

The great thing about Neway is its birthday promotion package. If it’s your birthday, you’ll get a free head charge for every booking of six persons and above per room. You will also receive a free bottle of champagne and cake.
Currently, a lucky draw is being held now at Neway offering the grand prize of a trip to Hong Kong. The repertoire includes Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai and Filipino songs. Prices range from RM5 to RM14.

Opened just last year, Amp Square offers a great lunch buffet spread from 11am to 2pm. The food is a mixture of Asian and Western dishes, including Japanese and Italian. Become a member and you will get 20% off the normal rate, but this is only applicable on Mondays from 6pm to 3am. There is even a special price for students which starts from RM9. The price range is from RM9 to RM35.

There are basically four types of rooms to choose from – Theme Rooms, Party Rooms, Standard Rooms and the Signature Rooms. The Theme Room decor is inspired by Malaysia’s multi-cultural arts and lifestyles. The Party Room is a stylish lounge equipped with comfortable lights and sofa settings, acoustic video karaoke bar, gaming zone, Wi-Fi facilities and ensuite washroom. The Standard Room is a comfortable setting with lively colours and modern graphic designs, and it will definitely impress the enthusiasts.
The Signature Rooms are individually decorated with posters of popular entertainers or have themes of singing reality shows. For example, there is a room with Akademi Fantasia pictures on the wall while another bears KRU posters. Prices range from RM9 to RM52.

This outlet caters to guests of a higher-income bracket. But it is worth the cost as the setting is very classy. Prices range from RM18 to RM60. Red Box Plus offers a lunch and hi-tea buffet spread. For the lunch buffet, there is a free flow of soft drinks.

This outlet caters to the younger generation as the rates are far lower than the Red Box outlets.
The lunch package, which is from 10am to 1pm, includes one main dish, soup of the day, salad bar, sweet soup and a free flow of soft drinks. Depending on the day, the price for the lunch package ranges from RM10 to RM12 (excluding tax).
There is also a student promotion from Mondays to Fridays from 1pm to 6pm. The price is RM9 (excluding tax). For regular hours, which are from 6pm to 12am, the price ranges from RM30 to RM44, and you get free flow of drinks, tidbits and a free buffet dinner (the dinner ends at 10pm).
From 12am onwards, you get a free supper buffet and the price ranges from RM24 to RM34 (excluding tax).
Red Box Ria
Where: Sogo Kuala Lumpur
This outlet caters more to the Malay crowd so if you’re dying to sing all the latest Malay songs, this is definitely the place for you. Interestingly, it doesn’t charge for the room but only for the lunch and Happy Hour. It charges per head, with the lunch package costing from RM9 to RM11. Lunch is from 11am to 2pm. Happy Hour is from 1pm to 6pm and the price ranges from RM14 to RM16 per person.

Crystal KTV has 16 elegantly furnished rooms that are ideal for business and social gatherings. Ample parking facilities complete with car jockey service are available. Chauffeur service is provided for a nominal fee should one overindulge in alcoholic beverages. Price is charged per room, from RM200 to RM400.
