A regal touch to wedding

SUSHILAYANTI Sumadi and Irmohizam Ibrahim were queen and king of the day as they celebrated their nuptials in traditional royal Malay wedding style.

The ballroom where the wedding dinner was held featured an old-style Malay royal setting, complete with a “persada” threshold.

Sheraton Subang Hotel & Towers wedding planner Suriati Ibrahim said brown and gold was used as the event’s colour theme, in keeping with its traditional royal setting.

“The programme follows the adat istiadat lama, including a parade of the bridal party and a mini-orchestra using traditional musical instruments,” she said.

“We also have a troupe of six dancers who were brought in from Kelantan to perform the ‘mak yong’ and other dances with Javanese elements.

“The couple was welcomed into the ballroom with an old Javanese song that tells the story of a princess who felt sad after losing her pet, and how happy she was after a prince found her,” she said.

Suriati said the dinner menu included a touch of Javanese elements with Nasi Beriyani, Rendang Tok Syed and Ayam Masak Merah being among the items served.

As for the wedding favours, Suriati gave the usual “bunga telur” a traditional twist.

“I was inspired by a gift I got from a friend. Hence the guests will be taking home an egg, the symbol of fertility, in an ornate jar,” she said, adding that she had suggested a traditional royal wedding when the couple approached her for ideas.

Raja Muda Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, together with Tengku Panglima di-Raja Selangor Tengku Sulaiman Shah led the VIP guests in performing the “merenjis” (sprinkling rosewater) ceremony.

The others included Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Minister Datuk Noh Omar, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, Universiti Teknologi Mara vice-chancellor Tan Sri Prof Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah and their spouses.

Also present were the bride’s parents Datuk Sumadi Ismail and Datin Siti Maimunah Hashim, and groom’s mother Rafiah Mohamad.

The couple, both the firstborns in their families, are also neighbours in Shah Alam.
