Overnight camping pays off for MU fans

NOT WANTING to miss out on the chance to get Manchester United Asia Tour 2009 match tickets, a group of die-hard Manchester United fans spent the night in front of Studio V in 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya,

The first 500 Star readers who showed up at the Studio V in 1 Utama last Saturday with seven coupons printed in the newspaper from July 1 to July 7 stood a chance to win the RM308, RM68 or RM58 tickets and a training pass, by means of a draw.

Ardent fans: Lucky winners of the RM308 tickets had the opportunity to have their pictures taken with Fred the Red.

Murali Haripalan, 25, from Kuala Lumpur, said he was at the mall since 8pm on Friday to make sure he secured a spot.

“By 6am, there were about 50 people queuing up.

“The guards kept chasing us away so we actually wrote our names in order on a paper and thankfully, everyone stuck to the list,” said Murali.

The die-hard Manchester United supporter whose ultimate dream is to visit Old Trafford some day heaved a sigh of relief when he finally got to stick his hand into the box to pick a ticket.

Even though he only walked away with the RM58 ticket, Murali was all smiles and was looking forward to catch the Red Devils in action against the Malaysian Selection at Bukit Jalil this Saturday.

Hanif Ahmad, 32, from Kuala Lumpur, has been supporting the team for more than 20 years and he also waited overnight at Studio V with his sister-in-law Shireen Mushtaq, 36, and her children Tasleem, 14, Mohammad Sahil Khan, 12, and Farheen, 11, to secure a spot in the line.

The ticket counter opened at 11am but by 10.30am, more than 500 people had already queued up outside Studio V and a long and winding line had formed, spilling onto the entrance of the shopping mall.

The atmosphere was lively as Manchester United posters and banners were put up around Studio V and the football club’s catchy tunes like Glory Glory Man United and Move Move Move were blaring from the loudspeakers.

Shouts of joy could be heard from those who won the RM308 tickets, followed by applause from those waiting in line.

The 500 tickets were given out by noon and about 500 others who were still waiting in line with their coupons received a training pass each.

Those with the training pass would be able to watch the team’s training session at Bukit Jalil on Friday evening.

Winners of the RM308 tickets also got an exclusive photo session with the Manchester United mascot Fred the Red.

Currently, only the RM58 tickets are still available from or by calling 03-7880 7999.
