KUALA LUMPUR: The Sungai Besi Highway will be extended to link the existing expressway with the Middle Ring Road II and other housing areas in Pandan.
Currently, the expressway, which is operated by Besraya Sdn Bhd, stretches from the Jalan Istana interchange in Sungai Besi to Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang.
The 12.3km extension will have interchanges at Salak Selatan, Jalan Istana, Ikan Emas, Loke Yew, Jalan Cheras, Shamelin Perkasa, MRR2 North (where Jalan Pandan Jaya intersects the MRR2), MRR2 South (where Jalan Pandan Indah intersects the MRR2), Pandan Jaya and Pandan Utama.
The new link, which will be mostly elevated, will have one toll plaza.
The extension, dubbed the Besraya Elevated Expressway (BEE), was announced by Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamad yesterday.
Mohd Zin said Besraya would operate the new link.
“It will act as an alternative route for traffic heading from east Kuala Lumpur to the southern part of Kuala Lumpur and vice-versa,” he said.
Earlier, Mohd Zin closed the highway’s Salak Jaya toll plaza at 12.30pm. Cars used to have to pay RM1.30 at the toll plaza, which was opened in May 1999.
He said the Government need not compensate Besraya for the closure.
