THE sprightly senior citizens of USJ and Subang Jaya arrived bright and early on a recent Wednesday morning to help raise dengue awareness.
They went to the field at USJ 11/3 at about 7.30am, after their taichi and qigong activities, to help collect rubbish that was strewn all over the park.
Senior Citizens Club of Subang Jaya president Yeong Teik Boon had led the group of seniors who were mostly members of the club as well.
Yeong said 45 senior citizens had volunteered their time for the campaign.
“We did this following a suggestion by Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh when we asked her how we could help out,” he said.
“She asked if the senior citizens could take the lead to help raise dengue awareness so that, hopefully, youngsters would follow suit.
“I told my members that they needed to help themselves and their families and they also learned to take precautionary measures against dengue.
“It’s a good campaign and we will pledge our support and help again should Yeoh ask,” he said.
Yeoh, who was also present at the gotong-royong, worked together with the residents to pick up the trash.
She hoped that young people would take after the senior citizens.
“If the elderly could come out to make a difference, then this should be an example for young people to follow.
“The senior citizens today show us what the true meaning of communal living is. They come out for morning exercise together, eat together and contribute to a community effort like this together,” she said.
After cleaning up the field at USJ11/3, the senior citizens proceeded to clear rubbish from another field at USJ 11/7.
The gotong-royong ended about two hours later.
Meanwhile, Yeong also urged senior citizens above the age of 50 and also the handicapped to become members of his club by calling him at 012-238 6864.
This, he said, would enable him to know how to contact or locate them for any future assistance they may require.
