IT was a proud day for 151 graduates of the Montfort Boys Town (MBT) who now have skills to enter the working world.
“Only about 20% of school leavers are able to pursue tertiary education, so vocational training is very important to train our youths to provide them with skills to survive in society,” said Selangor senior executive councillor Teresa Kok, who was the guest of honour at the event.
Kok, who is also the state Investment, Industry and Commerce Committee chairman, said the state government is looking into the setting-up of high-tech and high-end firms and factories in Selangor.
“A lot of times, we are short of trained and skilled manpower. That is why the Mentri Besar (Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim) has been talking about the training and retraining of young people so that we can compete with other states or nations in the region,” she said.
During the event, Kok gave a RM5,000 contribution on behalf of the state government to the school.
MBT board of governors chairman Tan Sri Clifford Herbert said they were currently raising funds to upgrade school facilities that are more than 35-years-old.
“We've also built the Montfort Girls Centre and hope to increase the numbers of students progressively but costs are increasing all the time,” said Herbert.
MBT students are mostly underprivileged youths who go through two years of character formation and industrial skills training in areas like motor mechanics, graphic design and multimedia, carpentry, computer maintenance and printing.
According to The Star Education Fund manager Richard Foo, four students received its scholarship to obtain their certificate in printing.
The scholarship is worth RM5,000 per person annually.
Kok also presented the scholar of the year award to Sivakumar Chinnodu and Nanthiny Nelamegan.
