Change is inevitable

Everybody is subject to some form of change and we deal with change in different ways.

TWO powerful slogans Change We Need and Change We Can Believe In moved people’s thinking and swept Barack Obama to victory as the 44th US president in the recent presidential race.

The catchword “change” is commanding and made an impact on the minds of many Americans and now change has come to the country.

The same can be applied in your day to day life if you seek transformation, a fresh look, or want to give up old or unhealthy habits, because life in never stagnant and is ever changing.

All of us are subject to some form of change and we deal with change in different ways, knowingly or ingeniously.

Some of us ignore change and hope it disappears, while others thrive on it for the betterment of theirlives.

Changes is inevitable and if we don’t change, we are very likely to be left out or may even become extinct. On the other hand, change can induce a variety of reactions, from excitement in the beginning to fear and anxiety later on.

Whether we like it on not, change is a learning process because we live in a world of uncertainty and change will happen at various stages in every individual’s life.

It is said that one who accepts them and changes with them is the one who succeeds.

Changes can involve many sectors of life. The most common are work, relationships, partnerships, travel and family.

Although most people don’t like change, it is coming. For instance, we are approaching the end of 2008 and will soon be ushering in the New Year, which will definitely bring about some form of change in all our activities whether at home or at work.

If you are unable to agree to changes thus far, then this is the best time for you to make a resolution that brings about improvement to your life in 2009.

However, every person can choose to go on his or her own path or be pushed into one.

Making choices and changes in life can be perceived as threatening because such movements require adjustments, which can create insecurity. Doubt arises because modification means leaving familiar ground and heading into something he or she may not feel safe with.

Working in a new direction helps one find light and wisdom because changes make life challenging, colourful and enjoyable.

It is vital that you recognise and accept small changes early so that you can adopt bigger changes easily.

A major factor of change is you have to know what you want, know how to get it and build a structure to support the change you make.

One of the major obstacles of change is fear, which retards the growth of an individual and stops the person from moving forward.

People should understand that fear will always be with you but you can learn to rule it rather than let it rule you.

Another hurdle is the worry of failure, which will always linger, but one should realise that it is only through failure that success comes.

Failure is just feedback that tells you to try something different.

You should wake up and combat setbacks as they are indicators for you to change.

This is because fear and failure can lead you to:

> Worry

> Be withdrawn

> Tension

> Fatigue

> Loss of interest

> Loss of confidence

> Losing control

> Losing focus and unable to concentrate

> Headaches and stomach upsets

Change is all about learning how to adapt and handle new situations, skills, attitudes and beliefs.

We should learn to look at things with a new pair of eyes and be receptive to doing things differently so that we can achieve so much more. Change is constant and does not question whether we want it or not.

When we agree to change remember that we choose, to rather than have to, because this helps to motivate and energise us.

This moves us to freedom and power and not pain. As long as we are alive we are subject to change from cradle to grave and we cannot escape this cycle of life.

Face your fear

Here is a guide to help you get out of your comfort zone and face fear.

  • Sit in a comfortable chair in a quiet spot.
  • Sit in silence and drop your shoulders and breath normal.
  • Take yourself back to that time and fully experience what you saw, felt and heard.
  • Remember how good it felt when you had expanded your comfort zone and knew you had achieved something.
  • The fear was probably still present when you made the decision to change and went ahead.
  • You took action despite the fear and you succeeded
