KUCHING: A villager escaped with just injuries when a crocodile attacked him in Sungai Gelugar, Pulau Salak in Santubong near here.
Yahya Jamali, 36, sustained injuries on his left ear, left arm and stomach, and is now warded at the Sarawak General Hospital.
He was attacked by the 4m-long reptile while searching for kayu bakau at about 7am on Thursday.
''I was in waist-deep water near the river bank when the crocodile suddenly appeared and attacked me.
''It bit me on my waist and I put up a fight,'' said Yahya, who still appeared frightened as he was lying in his hospital bed.
He said he might have poked the eye of the crocodile in the struggle before it submerged in the river.
Yahya, who was alone, then quickly boarded his small boat, and sought help at a nearby factory.
He said this was the first time that he was attacked by a crocodile although he had been harvesting kayu bakau from the area for the past four years.
