DO you know of an unsung Malaysian hero who has persevered against the odds to succeed or helped their community in unique ways that has not been previously highlighted? If so, then take his picture and write about him.
TheCICAK, a Malaysian e-magazine, has launched a contest to search for 50 young Malaysians heroes in conjunction with the country’s 50th Independence Day.
There are RM1,000 worth of prizes to be given away to the top three winners and the Most Outstanding Hero award winner who will be voted for by readers.
The top 50 stories, including the winners, will be published in a book and on theCICAK’s website (www.thecicak.com).
The competition, a collaboration by theCICAK and online magazine Inkyhands and supported by Pusat Komunikasi Masyarakat, aims to create awareness and discussion among Malaysian youth, to give them a voice and remind policymakers that young people should be taken seriously.
To compete, interview and photograph a Malaysian between the ages of 12 to 29 and justify, in 1,000 words or less, why he or she is a hero. You must write about what the person did for family, friends or society, and the challenges that she or he had to overcome.
Submissions can be in the form of narratives, profile features, stories, opinion pieces and whatever else it takes to convince the judges that your interviewee deserves to be a hero! Your entries can be in either English or Bahasa Malaysia.
The panel of judges include newspaper columnist and women’s right campaigner Marina Mahathir, Inkyhands editor Nicholas Wong and renowned Malaysian blogger Jeff Ooi.
The competition is funded by a USD2,500 (RM8,500) grant by the Swarthmore Foundation at Swarthmore College, Pennyslvania.
Log on to theCICAK’s website for more information or e-mail email@example.com. The deadline is July 15.
