MALACCA: State MCA chairman and Machap assemblyman Datuk Wira Poh Ah Tiam (pic) died of cancer and renal failure at the Pantai Hospital in Ayeh Keroh yesterday. He was 55.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said a by-election would be held.
“An acting executive councillor will be appointed to take over his duties for the time being.
“His demise is a great loss.”
Mohd Ali conveyed his condolences to Poh’s family, adding that the state government would bear all medical and funeral costs.
Poh leaves a wife Datin Tan Moi King, 56, and three children, Sin Tee, 30, Sin Huei, 26 and Sin Yoong, 23.
Among those who paid their last respects was MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting.
Ong said Poh’s demise was a great loss to the party, people and country.
He said Poh was a respected leader who played an active role in developing Malacca.
Poh left teaching to go into business and later entered politics. He was elected the Pulau Sebang state assemblyman in 1986.
In 2005, he was appointed the Malacca state liaison committee chairman (2005-2008) and MCA deputy treasurer-general (2005-2008).
