Under the five-year rotation system, Sultan Mizan was proclaimed the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, succeeding Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail.
Sultan Mizan, 44, will be the second youngest Yang di-Pertuan Agong after Tuanku Syed Putra Almarhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail of Perlis who took office as King on Jan 4, 1961, at the age of 41.
A Ruler concerned about the welfare of his subjects, Sultan Mizan makes efforts to go to all mosques in Terengganu for Friday prayers to be with the people.
His Majesty also continues with the practice of giving alms to orphans and the poor every Friday as was done by his late father Sultan Mahmud AlMuktafi Billah Shah.
During his younger days, Sultan Mizan liked to play football.
Sultan Mizan is also active in sports like football, golf, taekwondo and scuba diving, but due to his busy schedule is only able to concentrate on equestrian sports.
Born on Jan 2, 1962, Sultan Mizan received his early education at Sekolah Rendah Sultan Sulaiman and later at Sekolah Menengah Sultan Sulaiman before leaving for Geelongs Grammar in Melbourne, Australia.
In 1981, he attended military training for three months at Karah Camp, Port Dickson, and then the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Britain, until Dec 9, 1983.
Sultan Mizan then attended the United States International University Europe in London, where he received his degree in International Relations in 1988.
He married Permaisuri Nur Zahirah on March 28, 1996, and they have four children – Tengku Nadhirah Zahrah, 10, Tengku Muhammad Ismail, eight, Tengku Muhammad Mua'az, six, and Tengku Fatimatuz Zahra', four. – Bernama
