Similarities attracted bride to Wirat

KUALA KANGSAR: Suwaidah Ismail and Perak footballer Wirat Nom have their Siamese descent to thank for uniting them in marriage.

Suwaidah, 24, said she first rejected Wirat but started to like him after finding out “our similarities.”

The bride recalled how she had turned down proposals from several suitors, and Wirat whom she first met four years ago at the Putra Palace gymnasium in Kangar.

SPECIAL DAY: Wirat and Suwaidah being led by the former’s teammates (from left) Mandjou and Abdoulaye to their wedding dais for the bersanding ceremony at Kampung Kroh in Padang Rengas, Kuala Kangsar, Sunday.
The midfielder, who is from Kampung Akar in Kedah, was then playing for Perlis.

“At first I did not respond to him, but I later fell for him due to his kindness and caring attitude, and also due to his Siamese descent,” said Suwaidah, who works as secretary at the State Economic Planning Unit in Kangar.

Wirat, 26, a Buddhist, has embraced Islam and taken on the name Daniel Fadzli Abdullah.

The couple held their akad nikah ceremony in May but had to postpone their wedding kenduri due to Wirat’s tight playing schedule.

The bride’s side held a reception at Suwaidah's hometown in Kampung Bunting, Perlis, on July 31, while yesterday's feast was hosted by Wirat at the home of his foster father Datuk Jamal Nasir Rasdi (who is the Perak football team manager) in Kampung Kroh, Padang Rengas, near here.

At the bersanding ceremony, the couple who were dressed radiantly in matching yellow outfits, received blessings from 2,000-odd guests.

Wirat's teammates Frank Seator, Keita Mandjou and Trouree Abdoulaye were also present.
