KUALA LUMPUR: A downpour that started at about 7.30pm yesterday caused Sungai Udang in Segambut to overflow, and resulting in 62 squatter houses hit by flash floods.
Residents of the affected area were forced to leave their homes temporarily and move to higher ground when the water level reached up to 2m.
They returned to their homes when the water subsided some three hours later.
Several other major roads in the Klang Valley were also affected, including Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Segambut, Jalan Kepong, Jalan Sungai Buloh and Jalan Kuching.
Rescue teams from the Fire and Rescue Department, City Hall and Civil Defence Department were sent to help the victims.
One of the victims, T. Umadevi, was forced to sit on the roof of her house in the heavy rain for two hours, holding her nine-month-old sister.
The sisters, who live in a squatter house in Kampung Sungai Udang, Segambut, were trembling from the cold when they were rescued.
“My sister was crying and shaking in my arms. I could not do anything but hold her as tight as I could, trying to keep her warm,'' said the 19-year-old student.
The family and several other victims later sought shelter at the nearby SM Segambut.
Sentul OCPD Asst Comm A. Thaiveegan said the water level rose up to at least 2m during the downpour but it subsided rapidly after the rained stopped about 10pm.
Meanwhile, traffic was chaotic along Jalan Sungai Buloh near the Damansara toll plaza after mud and tree branches covered part of the road following the downpour.
The rain had caused a nearby river to swell.
Hundreds of vehicles from both directions were forced to stop and until press time, the traffic remained at a standstill.
According to witnesses, three cars were dragged by the water into the river.
