KUCHING: Datuk Dr James Masing, who has taken over the supreme council chairmanship of Parti Rakyat Sarawak, is set to become its first president at the partys inaugural triennial general assembly here on Sunday.
The 700-odd delegates, who represent the partys 50 divisions, will be asked to endorse Dr Masing, who is the state Land Development Minister, as the party chief, according to a party official.
Chief Minister and state Barisan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud will open the assembly.
Endorsements for other key posts will also be sought based on a proposed line-up for the party leadership.
Former MP Datuk Sng Chee Hua is likely to become the partys deputy president.
Those expected to fill the five slots of vice-presidents are Deputy Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Joseph Entulu Belaun, state Assistant Agriculture Minister Dublin Unting, MPs Jimmy Donald and Billy Abit and assemblyman John Sikie.
Youth leader and assemblyman Mong Dagang and Wanita chief Josephine Mawat will also be vice-presidents by virtue of their positions in the movements.
Lawyer Clement Eddy is likely to become the treasurer-general and Wilfred Nissom, a political secretary to the Chief Minister, is set to become the information chief.
No objection to the proposed line-up is expected. Endorsing it at the assembly is just a formality, said the official.
The proposed line-up, it is understood, was agreed to during the supreme council meeting on Jan 8 when Dr Masing took over as council chairman from Sidi.
Sidi became the council secretary.
At the meeting, the supreme council was expanded to comprise 30 members.
Multi-racial Party Rakyat Sarawak came into being on Oct 21 last year when its registration was approved by the Registrar of Societies.
