AFTER Teoh Gek We quit her job last year, she dedicated her time to volunteering at charity organisations but soon realised it was not exactly what she wanted to do.
“I looked at how some people were having fun doing things they love while contributing to charity. They could turn to portals like JustGiving and SimplyGiving to raise funds for a cause, but there isn’t a portal like this in Malaysia,” the 34-year-old said.
That was when she had the idea of starting a similar portal for Malaysians and worked together with Teoh Chie Lean, Chin Hon Leong and Desmond Chong to make it happen.
After months of brainstorming, signing up charity organisations as partners and developing the site, PeopleGiving was finally launched yesterday at Menara Star in Petaling Jaya.

Gek We serves as PeopleGiving president while Chie Lean is the vice-president. The four founders are joined by 10 active volunteers in running PeopleGiving.
Individuals, corporations and non-governmental organisations can create campaigns on PeopleGiving (http://peoplegiving.org/), share the campaigns on social media and invite the public to donate to the causes.
To-date, 11 campaigns have been created at the site. Ten of them are fundraising efforts to purchase items for charity homes featured in The Star media group’s Do Good Day event, while the 11th campaign features a kayaking feat from Port Dickson to Malacca by Idris Mohamad and Chew Hoong Ling in aid of Voice of Women.
The charity organisations receiving the aid must be registered with PeopleGiving as partners. The portal currently has 12 charity partners, including WWF Malaysia, the Befrienders and Living Hope.
The public can donate to the campaigns via online bank transfer or credit card.
While PeopleGiving does not charge fundraisers or charity partners for using the platform, a fee of 3% for credit card transaction, or 3% or 60sen (whichever is higher) for online bank transfer, is imposed by a third party online payment service provider.
Star Publications (M) Bhd deputy group chief marketing officer Angelina Villanueva, who was present at the launch, applauded PeopleGiving’s efforts in engaging the public to participate in volunteerism.
“Malaysians are more than willing to offer their assistance, but the details of who, why and how are not easily available,” she said.
The ceremony also signifies a collaboration between PeopleGiving and The Star’s Do Good. Volunteer portal, a volunteer-matching portal to connect volunteers with charitable organisations.
“While Do Good. Volunteer provides the platform to source for volunteers, it is not a channel for fundraising. PeopleGiving, on the other hand, provides the platform to raise funds to allow these organisations to be on the receiving end of the public’s generosity.
“This collaboration is an ideal synergy between a volunteer matching portal and a fundraising portal,” Villanueva said.

MyTelehaus, on the other hand, has pledged to match the first RM1,000 raised on PeopleGiving for each of the 10 homes featured in The Star media group’s Do Good Day event.
