Barisan eyes support of young voters for polls

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth and Puteri Umno members are going all out to win the support of the younger generation of voters for the Barisan Nasional in the coming general election.

Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the younger generation played a crucial role in the country's progress.

“We have moved our machinery to ensure that the youth support our party,” he said after a special address by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the PWTC yesterday.

The gathering was held ahead of the Umno annual general assembly from Dec 1 to 3.

Khairy said the two wings had rebranded themselves by launching a new slogan: Barisan Nasional Pilihan Orang Muda (Barisan Nasional the choice of the younger generation).

“That slogan reflects our new identity and is part of our plans to re-energise our image among the youths.

“Previously, it was called Vote for BN' (Undilah BN), but we want to give the younger generation a choice,” he added.

On Najib's speech earlier, Khairy said the Umno president had advised the members to ensure the youths lent their support to Barisan.

The Election Commission has said that 70% of the 4.2 million unregistered voters were aged between 21 to 40 and an average 450,000 Malaysians turn 21 each year.
