PREPARATIONS are in full swing to make the Standard Chartered KL Marathon, at the Dataran Merdeka on June 27, a well co-ordinated one.
The event organisers Golazo said they were working closely with the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU), Federal Territory Amateur Athletics Association (FTAAA) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
“We are working on the logistics. The route has been finalised. it is not similar to last year’s one. The route is about 50% new and avoids the busy city centre. The route was determined after consultation with the City Police,” said Golazo’s director of operations Rainer Biemans.
“We felt the safety of the participants was a priority. However, the participants will not miss any of the city’s landmarks — Bukit Bintang, KL Twin Towers and Jalan Imbi — and the route will be an exciting one,’’ said Biemans.
The route, approved by the International Associaton of Athletics Federation (IAAF) and Association of International Marathon and Road Races (AIMS), will be utilised for the next five years.
In view of the current hot and humid conditions, the organisers will set up 24 water stations throughout the 42km route. Refresh-ments will be available at every 2km.
About 800 volunteers, including about 100 from the title sponsors Standard Chartered, will be involved in the marathon.
The volunteers were selected after an online-registraton programme. Those wishing to serve as volunteers were required to give feedback and information. Team leaders have been identified and a meeting will be held at the end of the month.
Standard Chartered have also nominated about 100 volunteers, who will service the drink stations.
Biemans said the MAAU would be responsible for official results.
“We will be able to release the top 10 finishers’ names after they are certified by the MAAU. It should not take long. The prize-giving ceremony will start at about 9.30am,’’ said Biemans.
The route will be reopened to the public at 11am. The organisers will take away the bips as well as chips from the participants.
