KUALA LUMPUR: National champion Mohd Zamri Salleh is bracing himself for a fast-paced race in the OCBC Cycle Malaysia criterium event at the KLCC today.
Zamri, who will be racing under the Armed Forces banner, said the short 1.7km circuit will encourage riders to go into attack often and a lull would result in a breakaway.
“It will be an interesting race ... I’m sure of that. The circuit is short and we are only racing around it for an hour so it will be non-stop action all the way,” said Zamri.
The criterium event in OCBC Cycle Malaysia will showcase the cream of the crop in Malaysian road cycling. Last season’s International Cycling Union (UCI) Asia Tour top team Terengganu Cycling, will send a full team of six riders.
Former national champion Mohd Shahrul Mat Amin, Mohd Saufi Mat Senan, Mohd Saiful Anuar Aziz, Mohd Nur Umardi Rosdi and Nur Amirull Fakhruddin will feature for Terengganu.
The race will also include pros from the OCBC Singapore team, with Malaysian Loh Sea Keong in the fray. The event also attracted Australia’s Arbitrage-Wormall team.
“The Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) is coming up next month (Feb 21-March 2) and I see this as a good warm-up for the event. Let’s see how fast our legs can go this early in the season,” quipped Zamri.
Meanwhile, managing director of organisers Spectrum Worldwide Chris Robb, said the introduction of the criterium event, besides the other events for cycling enthusiasts, marks “a step up from the inaugural edition last year.”
“Obviously, this is a massive boost for the event. Showcasing the thrill of the criterium will undoubtedly be an exciting feature for spectators,” said Robb.
Other activities in the two-day event which starts today include rides for children and also community rides tomorrow.
