THE Rakan Cop programme can help reduce crime but only if it is utilised, said state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan.
“Even though Perak has 117,401 out of 465,864 registered Rakan Cop members nationwide, they are not active enough.
“They should make use of the Rakan Cop platform to share information with the police for crime-busting purposes,” he said.
If well-utilised, he said, the police can better crack down on crimes including house break-ins, robbery, snatch theft and vehicle theft.
Their effort would compliment additional measures taken by the police to curb crime such as increased patrols and roadblocks.
“It will further reduce the crime rate in the state, which had already dropped by 16.08% for January compared to the same period last year,” he said.
A total of 401 cases were reported in the first month of last year, as opposed to 166 cases in 2012.
DCP Mohd Shukri was speaking to reporters after the Perak police’s monthly gathering in Ipoh recently.
He also advised motorcyclists to increase their vigilance as 30% of crimes in the state consisted motorcycle theft.
“Based on police findings, most of the theft occurred due carelessness on the part of the motorcyclists.
“The mistakes include not locking their motorcycles properly and parking in secluded areas which are out of public sight,” said DCP Mohd Shukri.
He added that delinquent schoolboys also targeted motorcycles for spare parts, which they used to modify their own bikes.
Carelessness is also a factor for house break-ins, which constitutes 20% of the crimes.
Homes in fast developing places such as Ipoh and Parit Tengah are affected the most.
“Sufficient lights are not switched on at home which would have deterred thieves.
“Sometimes, doors and windows are not properly locked which allowed thieves to gain entry,” he said.
The public are also advised not to keep valuables at home unless necessary.
