REGISTRATION for the first edition
of the ‘Ride For Cleaner and Gree- ner 2013’ cycling event has closed, and an overwhelming number of participants has been recorded.
Organising chairman Alvin Boo (pic) said they initially targeted only 2,000 cyclists but due to good response, they received 2,550 entries.
“We would like to inform the public that Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang near Straits Quay will be closed from 5am to 7.30am on the event day, Jan 6.
“Participants have to reach the venue earlier as the briefing is at 6.45am before they are flagged off at exactly 7am,” he told a press conference at Straits Quay recently.
He urged cyclists not to speed or overtake the patrol car which will lead them along the way.
The cut-off time for cyclists is three hours, and sweeper trucks will collect cyclists who are unable to make it to the finishing point on time.
The event on Jan 6 is organised by 13 Lions Clubs, four Leo Clubs and Cleaner Greener Sports with the support of the Penang Municipal Council and the state government.
State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow, who was at the press conference, commended the organisers for promoting a healthy lifestyle, and cycling as a leisure and mode of transportation.
“They also pledged to donate RM10,000 from the total collection
to the Lions Club of Penang’s Komtar SightFirst Programme, which will be-nefit people with visual disabilities,” Chow said.
