IN our Book-marked! survey, we asked what book had the most impact on readers this year, and how. The five best answers will each receive:
> A Times Privilege Card, RM50 book vouchers, and a limited edition Times mug from Times bookstores;
> Three Penguin English Library collectible classics from Penguin Books Malaysia;
> Three critically-acclaimed fiction titles from MPH Distributors;
> Three young adult titles from Scholastic Malaysia;
> Three non-fiction titles on Malaysia from Marshall Cavendish.
Here are the five winning submissions, in no particular order:
Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan: It is not my favourite book, but I like to think that it marks the end of my teenage angst. Françoise Sagan wrote it when she was 17, and it does read like the writing of a teenage girl – a little superficial, very impressionable, and with unrealistic notions about love. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very beautifully written. I’m hoping that this is a moment of premature wisdom and that I’ll be right instead of melodramatic. Either way, I think it’s time for me to grow up, even if just for a little bit. Bonjour tristesse (French for “hello, sadness”), indeed. And hello to the future too. – Diane Yap, 19, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur
George Washington, Frontiersman by Zane Grey: This book hit me the most emotionally and caused me to change what I see in people. I once thought that people were selfish. But now I think the other way. I also learnt how to be braver, considering the fact that I was always a tiny bit scared of things! George Washington was a person with many traits that are rarely seen in a person today. He displayed remarkable patience, bravery and courage, which has led me to honour him very well and learn from his many experiences of failure, in which he never gave up. – Yip Ren-Wei, nine, Petaling Jaya, Selangor
To Hell In High Heels by Helena Frith Powell: Having amassed at least a hundred bottles of anti-ageing cream and now luxuriating in retirement, I have learnt to accept the natural process of ageing. This book talks about Botox injections, liposuction, laser treatment and plastic surgery. It has impacted me in ways that are informative yet practical. I learnt to look good at my age without having to clean out my bank account. It is elegantly written with oodles of humour. It makes me feel glad to be a woman. The trick is to let the wrinkles stay on the face but not in the heart. – Lim Mary, 56, Yong Peng, Johor
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom: This book has literally changed the way I think. When I moved to my dad’s house, I found this book (it’s my mum’s) in my box when unpacking. Like it’s destiny. Kind of like the movie/book 127 Hours, only painless. I have a dream to be a singer, but with so much going on, I lost sight of it. After I finished reading this book, my dream came back to me, it was an epiphany. Up until now, I have never let go of my true purpose, even when I’m holding onto it with only my pinkie. – Terng Xiang Yue, 17, Puchong, Selangor
Young Samurai series by Chris Bradford: It made me kill my first cockroach. I kid you not. The book left me deeply enthralled and wishing my life was as adventurous as Jack’s. I’ve always feared cockroaches. Then I thought, Jack faced scarier stuff than a cockroach. To be like Jack, I need to be brave. So after many deep breaths, much hesitation and tissues, SMACK! One cockroach down for the count! Then another ... and another. The tally stops there. This is also the series I spent ages chasing, only to have the whole set delivered to me one day. So did this book impact me? Heck, yes! – Chan Tian Wen, 14, Shah Alam, Selangor
