HOTELS and shopping malls in Penang are getting into the Deepavali spirit.
All spruced up with brightly coloured decorations, they are drawing a lot of customers and shoppers and spreading festive joy.
Most of the decorations are in the form of peacock-themed kolam and oil lamps.
In Gurney Drive, the ‘G’ sign in front of the G Hotel has been metamorphosed into a peacock shape.
“There is also a peacock-themed kolam at the lobby and we also bought peacock feathers for extra decoration to create a festive atmosphere,” said the hotel’s public relations manager Christina Tan.
She said the hotel was looking forward to an elaborate and colourful celebration on Deepavali day and added that there would be a special Deepavali buffet dinner at the G-Cafe.
Hard Rock Hotel marketing communications manager Grace Chiam said the hotel decided to add a twist to their decorations by displaying a guitar-themed kolam at the hotel lobby instead.
“Since our hotel is all about music, we try to incorporate musical elements in most of our decorations which should delight all our guests,” she said.
Equatorial Hotel Penang public relations manager Debra Gerardine Jayesuria said eight hotel staff members designed a kolam in the lobby, featuring a majestic-looking peacock measuring 5m long and 4m wide.
Golden Sands Resort and Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa communications director Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman said the hotel would be designing a kolam at the lobby to usher in the festive occasion.
“We will also be serving special Indian cuisine in our buffet line-up for the guests on Deepavali day,” he said.
Over at Gurney Plaza, a kolam measuring 4m by 4m welcomes shoppers at the entrance.
Many excited shoppers seized the opportunity to take pictures beside the kolam.
Incorporating peacock feathers and flowers, the kolam design was the brainchild of Equator Academy of Art lecturer Melvin Arlegui.
He completed the kolam with the help of 10 students in five days using 50kg of coloured rice.
“We believe that kolam is an important element during Deepavali and we are pleased to display a beautiful and colourful kolam at our entrance,” said Gurney Plaza marketing communications manager Peter Chan.
Sunshine Wholesale Mart Sdn Bhd general manager Yee Kam Ming said the supermarket even prepared special Deepavali paper bags for its customers.
He added that a kolam designing competition was also held at the supermarket last weekend and the winning design was displayed at its lobby in Bayan Baru.
Gama Supermarket & Depart-mental Store advertising, promotions and visual merchandising department assistant manager Joseph Tan said the supermarket erected three specially designed giant oil lamps at the main entrance,.
The lamps are made of metal and lighted up at night.
Over at Queensbay Mall, a kolam featuring two peacocks is displayed in front of the information counter on the ground floor.
The mall’s marketing communications manager Wendy Wong said a Little Miss Saree contest would be held tomorrow.
1st Avenue Mall advertising and promotions senior executive Cheong Sook Yeng said shoppers could admire a peacock-themed kolam measuring 4.6m long and 3.7m wide in front of the mall’s information counter.
