A TOY library will soon be set up at the Penang Down Syndrome Association premises on Lebuhraya Rose, Pulau Tikus in George Town.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s wife Betty Chew said the library would be modelled after the one that was recently opened in the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) Penang premises on Jalan Pantai Jerejak, Bayan Lepas.
She said Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara, an organisation for the wives of Penang’s elected representatives and women elected representatives, and Sim Children and Child Heart Clinic would jointly open the library by Oct 17, under its Toy Stories programme.
“While many children keep adding new toys to their collection at home, many underprivileged ones hardly have any to play with.
“If your child’s room is cluttered with toys, perhaps you could consider giving some away to these deserving children,” she said after opening Sunway Carnival Mall Seberang Jaya’s Second Chance Toys campaign on Saturday.
Chew, who is also Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara chairman, said instead of giving individual toys to the children, it was better to create a library of toys so that the children could have different toys to play with.
“It also helps promote a sense of sharing among the children,” she said.
Chew said similar to the earlier NASOM toy library, school children would also be sought to help draw murals on the library’s walls, apart from assisting in mending and cleaning up the toys before displaying them in the library.
Sunway Carnival Mall marketing manager Amy Lee said a giant collection box had been placed next to the information counter in the mall’s concourse area for shoppers to donate their used toys.
“We will leave the box there for a period of time to collect as many toys as possible,” she said, adding that the programme was being held in collaboration with the Seberang Prai Municipal Council’s LA 21 initiative.
Councillor Soon Lip Chee said he would try to get kindergartens to help collect some of the toys.
