THAI food certainly has its following in our country and like good neighbours, Malaysians have adopted the cuisine like their own.
So, when a famous Thai restaurant from up north opened its doors in Petaling Jaya, it was certainly good news for the Klang Valley community.
Shrimpz at Aman Suria Damansara is quite unlike its traditional style counterpart on the mystical island of Langkawi.
The Langkawi outlet is situated within a prawn farm and is popular with both local and foreign tourists, attracting customers to its village-styled thatched huts overlooking the pond.
It is an ideal getaway, offering customers the opportunity to learn about organic prawn farming techniques and bio-technology methods for soil preservation, while on holiday.
There is also archery and horse riding for those who prefer to participate in activities of the dry kind.
Shrimpz Ethnic Thai director Hashnoel Murshim said the decision to open an outlet in the Klang Valley followed requests from their regular customers.
To give diners a taste of spectacular Thai food, a team of Thai chefs were hired and in March 2008, the Aman Suria outlet opened for business.
The outlet lacks the vastness of the Langkawi restaurant as it occupies a corner lot spot at a commercial block but rest assured, the prawns used here are the very same organic tiger prawns farmed in Langkawi.
The Tiger Prawn Fritters with Tamarind Sauce (Goong Nam Mat Kha), Stir-Fried Tiger Prawn with Petai and Belacan (Kun Pak Khapit Sator), Steam Prawns with Thai Chilli Lime Dip (Kung Neng), Spicy Deep Fried Tiger Prawn Top with Coconut Milk (Chu Chi Kung) and Black Pepper Tiger Prawn (Kung Prak Prek Thai Dam) are some of the lovely prawn dishes on the menu.
A visit to a Thai restaurant would not be complete without a taste of spicy sour tomyam and to make sure we got our fill, executive director Rozie Zainuddin and Azmelia Aznan served us Tomyam Rua’mit.
Hashnoel, Rozie and Azmelia decided on dishes that were not out of the ordinary so that we could easily rate the taste of familiar dishes like Chicken Green Curry (Kheng Ke Au Wan Khai), Shredded Crispy Duck Salad (Yam Phet Krop) and Shrimpz Marinated Grilled Beef (Ne’a Yang Shrimpz).
Prior to the main courses, we were served Mieng Kam (Kodok Leaves with Thai condiments) and Thod Man Goong (Deep Fried Prawn Cakes).
While appreciating all they had to offer, we sipped the refreshing taste of Shrimpz speciality drinks Shrimpz Special — a fusion of lemongrass and lime juice with mint leaves and Mango Smoothie.
The contemporary indoor and outdoor dining venue, illuminated with candles at the glass windows and a water feature outside, seats 120 people.
On weekends, from 7pm onwards there is the added feature of Thai barbecue at the outdoor area.
On the menu are four types of Thai sauces to complement an array of barbecue items ranging from seafood to meats at affordable prices.
For this month, the Ramadan buffet features 33 dishes including Shrimpz special Thai barbecue, priced at RM40 nett for adults and RM20 nett for children under 12 years old.
