Moto3 rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin takes 11th spot after lack of pace and mistakes

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Moto3 rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin climbed from 18th on the starting grid to finish well within the points in 11th place in the Italian MotoGP at the Mugello Circuit.

The 22-year-old, who started from his season-worst position on the sixth row yesterday, had a brilliant start to zoom past the other riders to sit in eighth position after four laps.

But, as the six leading contenders – including race winner and Red Bull KTM Ajo team-mate Luis Salom – peeled away at the front, Zulfahmi was unable to match the pace.

Apart from the lack of pace, Zulfahmi also made some mistakes to settle for 11th spot and claim five points.

This sees Zulfahmi dropping two rungs to eighth in the championship standings with 33 points.

“I had a good start in the race but I made some mistakes. I missed a gear and the riders in the group caught up with me,” he said.

“I don’t think it was a good result for me but it’s an improvement from the qualifying.”

But the crux of the matter for Zulfahmi is that he needs to remain competitive from practice until qualifying – something he has never managed thus far.

“We have to work harder from practice until qualifying. Most of the time we had some pace in practice but I always end up starting from behind in qualifying,” he said.

“It will be difficult to catch up with the guys at the front when you start at the back. I hope to improve during qualifying next time.”
