Lovely mothers to the fore

MOTHERLY virtues shone forth when 12 finalists of Gurney Plaza’s My Lovely Mum Awards 2013 paid a visit to the Crystal Home in Air Itam, Penang.

The contestants mingled with the home’s 22 underprivileged children, aged between eight and 18, later serving them food and distributing bags of goodies and gifts.

Hilarious moments ensued when the mothers danced, sang and played games to entertain the youngsters during the two-hour get-together organised to foster closer ties between the local community.

Mother of two Callister Seah, 34, showcased her delicate, balloon art skills which she learned just a day earlier through videos in the Internet — twisting and tying various balloon animals for her adoring audience.

“As a mum, I can empathise with the kids’ situation. It pains me that they don’t have their parents around to shower them with tender loving care.

“I signed up for this contest mainly because I knew we had the opportunity to come here today, and bring these children some cheer,” said Seah, a day care teacher.

Sales executive Fahyu Hanim Ahmad, 33, also a mother of two, brought a set of costumes to dress the children up.

She later led some of them on an upbeat dance routine, much to their delight.

She said: “It’s really wonderful to be able to meet these lovely children, and give them an enjoyable time.”

Accounting manager Yeong Ching Har, 32, a proud mother of four with a passion for dancing, similarly put the excitable fledglings through their paces with a quirky routine.

“This visit has been an eye-opener. It showed us that in this world, there are many in need, and those of us who have been blessed in life, should extend a hand of compassion,” she said.

Crystal Home director David Barnabas, pointed out that it was a novel and immensely enjoyable experience for the children, and expressed his hope that more segments of society would similarly come forward in support.

The home is located at 4, Reservoir Walk in Air Itam. For donations, contact Barnabas’ wife Esther at 04-8273079.

Besides the gifts funded from their own pockets, the mothers also distributed some 100kg of story books, collected during the mall’s ‘Donate Children’s Story Books’ campaign held in conjunction with Earth Hour in March.

The mall’s My Lovely Mum Awards 2013 final will be held on Sunday at the New Wing Atrium beginning 3pm.

The finalists will parade in event T-shirts and evening wear, as well as perform a talent show in tandem with their own children.

The winner will be rewarded with prizes worth around RM21,850, while the second and third-placed mums will take home goodies worth around RM3,200 and RM2,850 respectively.

Subsidiary awards for the Most Beautiful Skin Mum, Most Elegant Mum, Most Photogenic Mum, Most Caring Smile Mum and two Most Popular Mum Awards determined by public voting, are also up for grabs.
