ALOR SETAR: Support for Barisan Nasional has surged based on a survey by Barisan Nasional Wanita, said its chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

She dismissed the poll by Universiti Malaya Centre for Democracy and Elections (UMCEDEL) last week which showed Barisan chief Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak four points behind PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as to who makes the better Prime Minister.

"The survey was just based on a random sampling of 1,407 voters. Surely, it does not represent the sentiment of people in the country," Shahrizat told reporters here.

Unlike the UMCEDEL poll, Shahrizat said a door-to-door survey by 22,000 Wanita Umno branches was conducted nationwide.

To date, the Barisan Wanita machinery has touched base with 9.5 million of the 13.2 million registered voters, Shahrizat said.

"We have received mixed responses but there is a higher number of voters (leaning) towards Barisan," said Shahrizat.

She added that the encouraging results from the survey showed that the people had confidence in the leadership of Najib and his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

On the factors behind the resurgence in support for Barisan, Shahrizat said the people were tired of the rhetoric by the opposition. She urged voters to practise caution when reading political updates online.
