FEB 2: In conjunction with his 50th year in music industry, India’s legendary Carnatic vocalist and leading playback singer, K.J. Yesudas (pic), is performing at a one-day concert this weekend. The maestro of classical and light music has already sung more than 50,000 songs in a career spanning more than five decades. Yesudas, also known as the Celestial Singer, has broken barriers of orthodoxy, language and region by singing in Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi and other Indian languages.

Tickets, priced at RM250, RM150, RM75, and RM50, can be purchased at Saravanaa Bhavan Restaurant (Masjid India, Brickfields and PJ), Raja Video Centre (Jln Ipoh), Melody Audio Video Centre (Lebuh Ampang), Seetharam Family CurryChouse (Brickfields), Temple of Fine Arts (Brickfields), Saradhas Saree Centre (Masjid India) JS Raaga (PJ) and Vasu Video (Klang). FEB 2 & 3: The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, led by music director Claus Peter Flor, presents two masterpieces this weekend. First, the orchestra will perform Symphony No.104 In D – ‘London’, a work composed by Joseph Haydn between 1794 and 1795. It was his final symphony and one of his crowning orchestral achievements.

After the interval, comes Piano Concerto No.2 In B Flat composed by Johannes Brahms. It was written while he was on a holiday in Italy in 1878, at the height of his creative power. Brahm’s work will feature pianist Hélène Grimaud, who is also an author of two successful books, Variations Sauvages and Lecons Particulières. Showtime: 8.30pm (Feb 2) and 3pm (Feb 3).

FEB 18: To mark the opening of the “40th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation”, the Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur will present percussion ensemble YAMATO – The Drummers of Japan for a one-night performance. The acclaimed troupe, which is performing here for the second time, has given over 2,500 performances all over the world. They live, work and train together in a traditional village in Japan. Together, they transform traditional Japanese drums and create a source of energy for the audience.

Tickets; Adults (RM50), students or JFKL members (RM40). Time: 8.30pm. The group will also perform at the Universiti Sains Malaysia health campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, on Feb 21 (3pm) and Feb 22 (8.30pm). Admission is free but reservation is required. FEB 2: To usher in the year of the snake, you could whip up something at home instead of buying it from the store, no? Join Nicholas Pillai as he teaches the recipe for Chicken Bak Kwa and Chicken Floss (Bak Hu). It’s easy and cheap to make these delicacies from scratch. Some parts of the class will be held outdoors, so please wear something comfortable in case it gets hot. Please bring two containers to take your food home. Class will commence once there are six students. Price: RM90. Time: 10am to 1pm.

MARCH 5: New to yoga or the Iyengar method? Then consider signing up for a 10-week introductory course beginning in March. Students will learn basic poses, breathing awareness, yogic principles of mind, body and movement, simple relaxation techniques and how to use props.

The needs of each individual will be addressed. Students can opt for morning weekday and evening classes, or weekend classes. Each class is 90 minutes and students must attend two classes a week.
