Wee Wern off to a winning start in first 2013 tourney

PETALING JAYA: World No. 7 Low Wee Wern got off to a flying start in her first match of the year with an easy win over Ireland’s Aisling Blake in the first round of the Greenwich Open at Conneticut on Friday.

National No. 2 Wee Wern has not played since suffering a hamstring injury in the Women’s World Open at Cayman Island last year.

Nevertheless, despite suffering an early setback, the 22-year-old Wee Wern did not show any signs of rustiness as she swept away Blake 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5.

It was the perfect start for Wee Wern who has never really done well in America in the past.

“I’m definitely happy to go through. It’s always tough playing in the first round and I don’t like the weather here at all,” said Wee Wern. in a text message.

“It’s literally minus 12 degrees over here and I’m really freezing. Match wise, Aisling played pretty well too and she was confident after beating Joshna (Chinappa) in the qualifiers a day earlier. So its a good win for me after all,” said Wee Wern.

The third seed will next take on another Irishwoman – veteran Madeline Perry – for a place in the quarter-finals.

Perry had an easier outing, demolishing American wildcard Maria Elena Ubina 11-4, 11-5, 11-7.

“I beat Madeline the last time we met but it was very close so I expect another close match again,” said Wee Wern.

“Furthermore, she has the experience and has already played in a tournament this year, so in a way she had a better head start.”

In other matches, top seed Raneem El Weleily and second seed Nour El Sherbini – both Egyptian youngsters – were in fine fettle dispatching off USA’s Amanda Sobhy and Hong Kong’s Joey Chan respectively.

A third Egyptian youngster – former world junior champion Nour El Tayeb – was also in fine form as she stunned fourth seed Annie Au of Hong Kong 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9.
